Reflection 27.03.23

Something I want to consider is how I can use my work as more of an emotional outlet in order to add more meaning and concept to the work I create. I am a very emotional and connected to the world around me yet have never explored this through my work. I am not sure for the reason for this, maybe it feels too vulnerable when shared with others?

My work, mainly my screen prints, consist of a rational and considered placing of line, colour and shape. In the contrary my reportage illustrations have more of a freedom of expression and line giving more of a feeling of a particular place and the movement of that place. I have been trying to capture more feeling within my prints, but it has not been as successful. Maybe it needs to contain something that is a deeper reflection of my emotion towards what I am illustrating; deeper than just what I think looks good. At the moment my prints are inspired by the French Riviera and other destinations in Europe and the feeling of holiday, usually at sunset. I need to add an extra layer of meaning to this as my why in choosing to illustrate it.

The reduction of visual information may add more of a though provoking image as it allows others to fill in the gaps of where the place is and could be, allowing for it to be more relatable, and also narrow down the visual information to the fundamental parts of the place that I find the most valuable highlighting them.

The feeling of absolute presentness, something I think my generation struggle with mainly due to technology. I think about all the things we are missing with our heads looking at our phones. I make a conscious effort to look around more and embrace the present and I think about all of the things I would be missing if I had been looking at my phone. I would like these moments I illustrate to urge people to be more in the present, as that is more meaningful that what is going on virtually in other peoples world. I think this can force us to look within ourselves more and stop comparing ourselves to others lives which have all sorts of bad effects on our health. Being present is something to practice with or without a phone. It's about taking a moment to really ground yourself and look around.
